What is a fossilized shark tooth? Sharks are constantly loosing teeth, and new ones move into their place. When a shark looses a tooth, it sinks to the bottom of the ocean and becomes buried in sediment, and begins to fossilize. The minerals in the sand and sediment gradually create the dark fossilized colors you see in the tooth. This process takes hundreds to even thousands of years to complete. Fossilized shark teeth are different colors, depending on the sediment in which they were buried. Most are black and dark grey, while some are brown or tan. How cool that we're seeing a shark tooth from over hundreds or thousands of years ago!?! I am nerding out.. aren't you!?!
